In today’s culture, school food has negatively impacted student’s wellbeing. These foods are normally packaged and handed out to students with either a milk or a choice of fresh produce with it. With schools that offer free lunch, the expectation of the quality lowers whereas other schools that offer higher quality lunch, students are expected to pay a fee for it. Because of this factor, food from the cafeteria is starting to affect the students physically. One of our students, Brennon J, being one of them.
The student news anchor recently reported that the school food has infected him with a stomach virus. To him, the breakfast they provide the students was a cause of what happened to him. “The baked items seem to be the worst things to get.” Brennon states that these items such as donuts, waffles, and pancakes have been making him feel terrible. “Those foods have always put my stomach in a bad mood in a way,” Brennon says.
Even though school usually offers a variety of foods, another part of this issue is the school lunch as well. Brennon exclaims that when eating the school lunch, the food served to students tends to be the main issue to his sickness. During lunch, what seems to be the cause of this is the staff leaving the food out after it has been cooked which causes harmful bacteria to form. This in turn can cause food poisoning which is the usual result for students who consume the food served to them.
Students though sometimes don’t even have time to eat the school lunch due to the long lines or other situations. After a certain amount of time, the lunch staff eventually packs the food away even if not every student has eaten yet. “When they run out of food or have already put away the food and don’t feel like going back to get it, what they’ll do is the most common thing is a ham and cheese sandwich or this tightly wrapped tortilla with pepperoni, ham, and cheese.” Brennon stated. Because of this, the quality of food worsens which results to those who consume them to get a stomach virus.
On May 17th, 2022, a school board meeting was administered with this matter at hand. Members of the board were discussing the condition of the school food and what must be done. Due to this number of issues that has risen, parents were upset with the condition of the food that schools were feeding their children. Through this meeting, hopefully the discussion over the quality of school food will be over once something is done to prevent more sickness from occurring.
