Throughout the years, there have been many questionable, but  also memorable trends. These trends tend to catch the attention of all, and continue throughout the years even into decades. Most trends fall out from being popular and suddenly drop sales and users. However, some come back in the future as the new crazed item, even when they have been around for years.
The target audience for most of these products is young adults. In 2023, there were a variety of trends such as, hair claw clips, Ugg Tazz slippers, Stanley water bottles, and flare/baggy jeans. How are young adults being influenced into these trends? This could be from the overuse of social media, such as Tik Tok, Instagram, and YouTube. According to the âNews Gallupâ, an article by Johnathan Rothwell, it states that â51% of US teenagers spend at least 4 hours daily on social media, and older teens girls, exceed the overall average in social media time.â
TikTok is asocial media platform where you can create, share, explore short videos, and where many users promote their products. Maxwell Iskiev, an author from HubSpot, states that â33% of Gen Z have bought a product based on an influencerâs recommendation in the past three months, and 28% have bought through an in-app shopâ. Applications like these, feature thousands of videos for young teens to watch and get influenced by.
When an anonymous TikTok user was asked how often do they come across trend setting advertisement, it was stated âI see them often, every day when I am on the app.âIn addition, this user has also purchased products from such ads.
Undoubtedly, social media is influencing young teens to fall into trends. Everyday, hundreds of young adults are buying from social media. Therefore contributing to the idea that young teens are being influenced by social media.
